Have you ever tried to do a lot of things in a day but felt unaccomplished at the end of the day? You did different things during the day, but in the end, it seemed you didn’t achieve anything productive. You couldn’t pinpoint one thing that stood out, but you were sure that you had been busy all day. That is the act of being busy but unproductive.
You are not alone in the struggle!
Being busy but unproductive is a dilemma that many Creatives face today. You must know that being busy does not automatically translate to being productive. As long as you don’t accomplish any goal, you’ve been faced with this dilemma.
In this post, we would be going through the meaning of this dilemma, why this happens, and how you can break free from this frustrating cycle.

Defining The Dilemma
Have you ever thought about why being busy doesn’t equal being productive, and what differentiates the two terms? Busy-ness and productivity are two terms that are often thought of as being the same, but being busy doesn’t necessarily mean that you are productive.

Being productive is not by doing something every hour and minute of the day, or having multiple tasks on your to-do list and ticking them off; it is getting significant results from the tasks you do. However, many people are ignorant of this, thinking that they just have to be engaged in one or more activities per time. Their focus isn’t about enjoying what they do or giving it the value it deserves; they just want to get through the tasks and quickly move to the next thing. This might give the individual a sense of productivity, glorying in the fact that he or she has worked longer hours, and ticked off many of the tasks on their to-do list.
Busyness Not Beneficial to Creativity
Busyness, as discussed earlier, is not the same as productivity. As creatives, being too busy is also a disadvantage to your creative spark. The truth is that busyness is shallow and it kills creative dreams.
We know that being creative means having something creative to do (our creative activity). It could be either writing, singing, painting or others, and these creative activities mostly depend on ideas. However, when an individual is caught up in different tasks, there is usually no time to think through on an idea and bring it into manifestation.
It is no secret that creativity thrives best when our mind is at ease. Ideas often come during quiet moments when our mind is less occupied and less focused on a particular thing. Most people get ideas either in the bathroom (when bathing), while doing the dishes in the kitchen, sitting quietly admiring nature, strolling, meditating, reading, listening to music or any other mindful activities that keep the mind at ease. During these moments, there is this sudden spark of inspiration that pops in our head, but in the absence of these mindful activities that enhance one’s creativity, there is no way to get the inspiration needed to express creativity.
Common Causes of this Dilemma with Proven Solutions
There are various factors that cause the dilemma of being busy but unproductive, some of which are listed below:
1. Distraction: This is a very common cause of being busy but unproductive. It is very easy to get distracted in this digitalized world, especially with the existence of social media. Social media, emails and unimportant tasks are those things that serve as perfect distractions and take up valuable time. Many of us are guilty of spending countless hours surfing the internet, and doing nothing worthwhile at the end of the day.
The solution to this is to set boundaries and practice mindfulness. You also need to practise self-control and learn to ignore unimportant social media activities that serve as distractions to you.
2. Multitasking: Multitasking is simply engaging in two or more work activities simultaneously. This is another cause of being busy without being productive. It can cause mental drainage to creatives, which can prevent you from focusing on an essential task for creativity because of preoccupation with too many tasks.
This issue can be resolved by setting priorities. There are certain tasks that are needed to drive the needle forward and those that simply keep you preoccupied. As a creative, you need to learn to differentiate the two tasks from each other and focus on more important tasks – learn to set priorities for your tasks.
3. Perfectionism: Many creatives fall into the perfectionism trap. They spend a valuable amount of time tweaking and revising their work, just to make it perfect. This often leads to delay in completing a project, leading to unproductiveness.
To prevent this, creatives must have the mindset that nothing is perfect. They should learn to do their best and leave the rest.
4. Overcommitment: Many people are guilty of this. Instead of saying ‘No’, they will rather accept and commit themselves to too many tasks. Doing too many projects at once can dilute your focus and energy, and make it hard to make significant progress on any single task. You can’t be everywhere – you need to have that mindset; learn to say no to some things; set priorities; and focus on one thing at a time.
5. Lack of Clear Goals: You need to set a clear goal of what you want to achieve, either daily, weekly, monthly or yearly. Without having goals to achieve, you would just be busy without achieving any significant result, but with a goal in mind, there is a clear vision of what you want to achieve at the end of each activity. Setting clear goals can prevent the dilemma of being busy but unproductive.
6. Poor Time Management: This factor is another cause of this dilemma. If you don’t have proper time management, you will realise that you’ve spent hours of each day working without achieving anything. We need to learn to manage our time properly. Time is the only gift given to man equally, but how we spend it is left to us. If you don’t set time to do the necessary things at the right time, you will end up doing the right thing at the wrong time, only to realise that you’ve been busy but unproductive.
So, manage your time properly to avoid this dilemma.
