Traditions

Challenging traditions with the aim of embracing creativity and innovation is a good way to start, in making a difference and making the world better place for all to thrive.

Traditions are the backbone of our cultural and societal frameworks. This system of belief has served as the framework of our society, providing a sense of continuity and identity. However, as the world evolves quickly, there is a need to challenge this tradition for creativity and innovation to thrive in society. There is a growing importance of embracing change as the world is ever evolving, but does that mean we should abandon our traditions? Of course not, but we have to live in the present and also look ahead to the future. In today’s fiercely competitive environment, outdated concepts, procedures, methods, and customs can not be of any benefit to us. This is where collaboration comes in.

Challenging traditions

Collaboration is the coming together of different individuals with diverse perspectives of life to achieve a common goal. While it is the key to unlocking new ideas, it is not without its hurdles, and one of such is traditions. Living in a society that encompasses diverse ethnic groups with various cultural traditions can be a major hindrance to collaboration. Therefore, challenging traditions is important because it helps us think differently and come up with new innovative ideas. This article will explain the concept of traditions, the need to challenge traditions, the role of collaboration and the strategies for challenging traditions.

Understanding Traditions: Meaning and Importance

The English word, ‘Tradition,’ comes from the Latin word, ‘trandere’ which means to pass to someone, or hand over. From this simple meaning of tradition, it can be said that traditions are customs, beliefs, or practices that are passed down from one generation to another within a society or community. Traditions form the basis of our families, communities and even our individual personalities. It is an integral part of culture that forms the foundation of our  lives. This is supported by the illustration that Dr. Detlef Reis (2022) wrote in his article for Thinkergy which says, “In many ways, traditions are like a mighty oak tree — deeply rooted in the past, towering high above the more mundane aspects of everyday life and providing everything on the ground with shadow and shelter from the celestial turbulences unfolding high up in the sky.”

Traditions frequently have a great impact on how our societies are shaped, and they offer a feeling of identity, continuity, and stability. They serve as a reminder that our past, present and future are all shaped by the history that defines us.

These long-established customs or beliefs that are passed down through generations play a significant role in our lives by giving us a sense of identity and belonging. Traditions help us to understand the way we live, know our place in the large landscape called the world, and help us create a stronger relationship or connection with people in a society. These connections often last for a long time, and they are what build in us a sense of empathy and respect, provide stability, and lead to the formation of a strong community.

Traditions are also essential for maintaining our cultural identity. They act as a bridge between the past, present, and future by reflecting the values, beliefs, and history of a society. Through traditions, our cultural heritage is passed and commemorated, and they support us in staying connected to our roots and feeling proud of our cultural identity. We maintain our culture by celebrating festivals, going to special events, and engaging in traditional activities. These activities that are maintained either daily or seasonally have preserved our culture from dying.

Lastly, as tradition is a foundation for how people interact, conduct, and live their lives, it is important for preserving stability within a society. People who adhere to established traditions may have a feeling of comfort and order in their daily routines because it makes them feel familiar and predictable.

Traditions As Limitations

As traditions are an essential and integral part of our lives, it is important to note that some traditions can become limitations to growth and progress, hamper societal development, and hinder innovation which is often a result of collaboration and generation of new ideas. The world is ever evolving, and change has become paramount.

Creativity and innovation are also required for technological development and sustenance of relevance when it comes to globalisation. Rigid traditionalism, however, can occasionally limit innovation and the ability to adjust to changing circumstances.

Below are some ways that traditions serve as limitations:

▪️ Familiarity and predictability

Due to adherence to certain traditional practices, people might have a feeling of familiarity and predictability in their daily routines, and this hinders them from going out of the box to think beyond.

▪️ Traditions can sometimes be outdated

This factor can hinder progress and collaboration. For example, consider the gender-specific rituals that assign people to particular roles. This type of tradition is not only outdated, but also does great harm, as it restricts women’s access to education and professional growth. This, in turn, prevents the advancement of gender equality and denies women the chance to contribute fully to societal development.

▪️ Resistance to change and new way of thinking

Some traditional practices don’t accept certain scientific findings, and this belief is imposed on those who uphold the culture. For example, some religious traditions don’t accept or donate blood to others. This belief is a great hindrance to medical breakthroughs. Other traditional practices can also create resistance to change, leading to limits in the development of technological advancement.

▪️ Traditions sometimes limit collaboration

Our world consists of people from different cultures and diverse traditions. The act of being a traditionalist or valuing one’s own traditions too much can lead to an “Us vs. Them” mentality, and this places a limit on the extent to which people can go in collaborating to achieve a common goal aimed at societal advancement. It’s important to keep in mind that there is knowledge to be gained from all cultures and that no one group has all the answers.

The Need To Challenge Traditions

Creativity and innovation are essential elements in the revolutionary world in which we dwell.- they form the heart of technological advancement. Creativity plays a vital role in solving the complex challenges we face in our modern society.
When people from various backgrounds collaborate to achieve common goals, they can use their special abilities and expertise to develop creative solutions. However, this can be affected by certain traditions, and this necessitates putting up a challenge against such traditions.

Challenging Traditions

The act of challenging traditions is crucial for progress because it encourages us to question why things are done in a certain way, and to explore better alternatives or options. It helps us think differently and come up with new ideas. Some people believe in sticking to the tradition of repeating something over and over, but is there really a need to do so when there’s little or no positive change? By questioning the current status quo, we may be confronted with new issues-the need to adjust to shifting conditions and advance as a society. If we always do things the same way, we won’t be able to improve or make progress.

Creative thinkers who want to make valuable innovative changes need to know that they can win by planning for the future and adjusting to the present, even as they honour the past. Great leaders are creative thinkers who don’t stick to norms. They think outside the box, always curious with open minds. They ask questions of “why not,” “what if,” and “why” constantly and love to challenge the current status quo.

History is one proof of this subject- it is filled with examples of creatives who challenged traditions and ended up making significant differences. Popular examples are Martin Luther King Jr. and Galileo Galili. Martin Luther King Jr. opposed racial segregation laws that were a norm back in the days, and this led to the change of the social norms. Galileo’s challenge to the geocentric understanding of the cosmos revolutionised science.

However, it is important to remember that, as much as questioning traditions can lead to advancement and creativity, it plays a major role in preserving stability and cultural identity in our countries. Communities may enhance their cultural links, protect their legacy, and foster a feeling of togetherness and belonging among the people they serve by upholding and cherishing their traditions. Furthermore, always keep in mind that changing our beliefs does not imply giving them up. Rather, it shows our ability to adapt to changing conditions.

Therefore, in order to be innovative and advance in a variety of fields, the practice of challenging traditions and looking for improvements is necessary.

In my next post, we will talk about collaboration and how it affects creativity and innovation. Let me know what you have learnt from this in the comment box below.
